Double-glazing retrofit units
When we recommend this product
Double-Glazing acts to "insulate" your windows to reduce heat loss by conduction in winter while still allowing warming radiation (visible light, infra-red) to enter the room through the window during the day. Double-glazed Windows are approximately twice as well insulated as single pnes, help to reduce noise and condensation. It is a great retrofit option for problem windows in areas of high use during winter days.
How to get the most from this product
Double-Glazing keeps you warmer in winter, but in summer the fact that light is still entering any uncovered window means that there will still be a overall net heat gain in summer. Therefore windows need effective covering using external blinds or eaves to prevent net heat gain in summer.
Also, even though double-glazed windows are more effectively insulated than single panes, they are still much less well insulated than a properly insulated wall. Therefore: minimize South-facing windows in winter to prevent net heat loss through windows that do not gain northern light. And at night consider increasing the insulation of your windows using internal blinds or curtains with pelmets.
Remember that the window frames will also potentially conduct heat: Aluminium is a very good conductor which might negate the effectiveness of the double-glazing whereas Wood or uPVC are better insulators. Some Aluminium frames have a "thermal break" in them to reduce the heat transfer.
Consult your supplier to discuss the benefits of thermal-breaks, gas-filled double-glazing, low-emissivity coatings and the most appropriate gap between the glass panes (which can vary between 6mm and 12mm or more)
